An ideal open termination reflects the incident wave rather than absorbing it in a matched resistance. This can create standing waves and affect connected networks.
How it works in practice
Real open ports have parasitic behavior and may radiate or couple unwanted signals. Use suitable terminations for unused ports when the circuit requires them. A calibration open is a characterized standard, not simply any unconnected connector. Distinguish test standards from normal operating loads.
Example and interpretation
Leaving one splitter branch open can alter network behavior compared with the specified matched-load condition.
Checks before use
- Identify unused ports
- Read termination requirements
- Use rated loads
- Verify the network configuration
Important limit
Do not use a random open adapter as a precision calibration standard.
