RF Splitter Phase Balance Explained

SMA coaxial two-way RF power divider with CentronRF watermark

Phase balance describes the difference in phase between output paths under specified conditions. It matters in coherent systems and antenna networks.

How it works in practice

Compare phase at the same reference planes with matched cables or calibrated corrections. Cable length differences can dominate the installed result even when the divider is well balanced. Verify the specification over the actual band and temperature conditions where relevant.

Example and interpretation

A divider's 2-degree imbalance cannot guarantee a 2-degree installed system if one branch has a longer cable.

Checks before use

  • Define reference planes
  • Match or calibrate cables
  • Measure relative phase
  • Check the required frequency span

Important limit

Equal power outputs do not necessarily have equal phase.
