A pass/fail rule should account for measurement uncertainty when a result is close to a specification limit. Agree on the decision method for the application.
How it works in practice
The measured value and its uncertainty are different quantities. Guard bands or other decision rules may be appropriate, but their choice depends on requirements and risk. Keep the rule transparent rather than silently changing it after measurement. Use current model-specific limits.
Example and interpretation
A result just below a maximum-loss limit may need review when uncertainty spans the boundary.
Checks before use
- Define the specification
- Estimate uncertainty
- Choose the decision rule
- Report borderline results clearly
Important limit
Do not declare an unqualified pass from an unsupported last decimal place.
