VNA Port Extension Versus Full Calibration

Rotary step RF attenuator with adjustment dials and CentronRF watermark

Port extension typically compensates a defined electrical delay and sometimes loss; full calibration corrects a broader error model. They are not interchangeable.

How it works in practice

Use the instrument's documented method and assumptions. A simple delay correction does not necessarily remove connector mismatch or all fixture effects. For precision de-embedding, obtain the required complex fixture information. Verify results with a suitable check device.

Example and interpretation

Removing a cable's phase slope with port extension does not automatically correct its imperfect match.

Checks before use

  • Identify the added path
  • Read method limitations
  • Apply the appropriate correction
  • Verify the resulting plane

Important limit

Do not describe every delay adjustment as a complete fixture calibration.
